Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia

By Derrek Stewart, 7/21/15, re-edited 2/15/24

Join Troy Lindner and Derrek Stewart on a brief respite from a long drive through the eastern United States.

Smith Mountain Lake is southeast of the city of Roanoke, Virginia. In 1963, the Smith Mountain Dam was built on the Roanoke River, creating the largest lake in Virginia.

Troy and I are on a long July road trip, and we are taking a one-day break from driving. So hop in the boat with us as we sample this reservoir.

Homes and private docks nestled in green mountains are throughout the Smith Mountain landscape.

Covered boat docks, blue skies, and shadows, how would you approach and fish this spot?

This steep shoreline with submerged boulders, overhanging tree limbs, and shadows looks worthy.

Troy proves that the location in the photo above was an excellent spot as he is about to boat a nice largie.

Cover elements, both artificial and natural, are everywhere here.

A swimbait technique, pitching boat docks produces a stout east coast largemouth bass!

Sailing and all types of boating are popular at Smith Mountain.

That’s all the time we have for this one-day excursion. The sun is setting, and it is time to return to the launch ramp. Smith Mountain is a beautiful lake with a lot of water to explore. I hope you enjoyed this mini-tour.
